Pip

A pip, short for percentage in point, is a standardised unit used as a measure of change in a currency pair. It can be measured in terms of the quote or base currency

A pip movement occurs each time the fourth decimal place of the price moves by one. For example, if the EUR/USD forex pair moves from 1.3243 to 1.13253, that is one pip of movement.

  • For most currency pairs:
    • 1 pip = 0.0001 (4th decimal place)
  • For JPY pairs:
    • 1 pip = 0.01 (2nd decimal place)

Example:

  • EUR/USD: 1.1050 → 1.1055 = 5 pips
  • USD/JPY: 110.25 → 110.30 = 5 pips

Value Calculation

In a USD-denominated account, if USD is the Quote currency (e.g., EUR/USD):

  • Standard Lot (100k): 1 Pip = $10.00
  • Mini Lot (10k): 1 Pip = $1.00
  • Micro Lot (1k): 1 Pip = $0.10

What is the pip value of 1 lot of EURUSD?
Formular: pip value = nv*pip*vol

 NV=nominal value unit traded=100,000

1pip=10 points=0.00010

Vol= Lot size to trade = 1 lot size=1.0

Therefore,

pip value = 100,000*0.00010*1.0= $10
